Summary. Researchers at the Technical University of Munich and Helmholtz Munich in Germany reported in Nature Synthesis, published online on 12 October, photocatalytic tetrapeptides that combine substrate recognition and triplet-energy photochemistry in a molecule weighing less than 750 daltons. Enantioselective photocatalysis has often relied either on small molecular photocatalysts with limited adaptability or on large photoenzymes. The team built a short peptide with pyroglutamic acid at the N terminus for substrate recognition and a thioxanthone-based amino acid at the C terminus to harvest visible light and transfer energy; two linker residues complete the tetrapeptide.

Research context (RUO). The catalysts were applied to photochemical deracemization and to enantioselective [2 + 2] photocycloaddition reactions under visible light. The paper is a synthetic-methods and catalysis study: it characterises how a compact peptide can place recognition and photocatalytic sites near a substrate, supported by NMR and molecular-dynamics work described by the authors. It does not report a clinical programme or any recommendation for use in people. For organic and peptide laboratories interested in asymmetric photochemistry, the contribution is a documented sub-750 Da peptide photocatalyst design rather than a product claim. Readers who need yields, enantiomeric ratios or full catalyst tables should consult the open-access article and its supplementary data.
